The capacity of feelings
2003年6月29日-----------------
When was the last time you cried? Why did you cry? As you know, “crying” is one way to express feelings and it is something only humans can do. Actually, I just noticed this fact recently. Since then, I have become interested in “my feelings” and “what I feel now”, and I am sure that I have come to enjoy my life more than before. So, I wish my speech today can give you some hints on how to enjoy your life.
“The capacity of feelings”―― We have a world of feelings such as happiness, sadness, anger, and so on. When an event comes to us, every one of these feelings is kept in a room, which is in our mind. The ways to store your feelings are all different. And also where to put the feelings depends on the person. For example, if your pet died, what would you say? “I am so sad”, “I should have played more” or just “Oh, my pet died”? “I am so sad” is with sadness and “I should have played more” includes repentance. However, “Oh, my pet died”, which does not express any feeling, only indicates the occurrence. Did you notice this? And if the feeling is stronger, it will be stored in a deeper position in your mind. On the other hand, if it is not so big a deal for the person, it will go to a more shallow position or perhaps not even reach the room.
To tell the truth, my way of thinking is a little bit different from my previous thinking. My original thought was that people have a boundary line which divides positive and negative feelings. And the capacities of both feelings are always the same; if the person feels this much happiness (positive feeling), then he/she must feel this much sadness (negative feeling), a same share. I have one friend who easily becomes deeply impressed even from only finding a tiny flower growing out of the asphalt. She is a very sensitive woman. When I think of her, I just think “She is a happy woman” because she always looks happy. On the other hand, she must feel not only positive feelings but also negative feelings like sadness or uneasiness as same as she feels “happiness”. I thought it was kind of an ironic thing because if you are a person of great sensitivity, you must know a large quantity of unhappy things. But I also learned another thing from her. I believe that people can change the ratio of the capacity of negative and positive feelings. This means, that she could control herself by laying a foundation with “positive” thinking.
Anyway, I am sure that since I started to be aware of my feelings, I cherish myself and the existence of the present. And also, to increase my variety of feelings leads to creating a more fertile character. Therefore, please think a great deal more of what you feel, and try to keep it in your mind. It will be something to live for. And it will be your valuable possession.
